unusual facts about Outremer

Adso of Montier-en-Der

His writings include hymns, lives of saints, among them a life of Saint Mansuetus, Bishop of Toul (485-509), a metrical rendering of the second book of the Dialogues of Pope Gregory I, and a tractate De Antichristo or in full Epistola Adsonis ad Gerbergam reginam de ortu et tempore antichristi in the form of a letter to Gerberga of Saxony, wife of Louis IV d'Outremer).

Calega Panzan

The Panzano brothers eventually extended their operations as far afield as Paris, Lagny-sur-Marne, Provins, Naples, Sicily, and Outremer (Syria).

Émile Francqui

He became the Managing Director of the Banque d'Outremer, and Managing Director of the Union Minière du Haut Katanga (UMHK).

Knight Crusader

The great military orders of the Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller are eager for the fray, but others are concerned that there are not enough Christian knights in Outremer to form a field army while continuing to garrison the castles that protect the Kingdom.

A notable aspect of the book is the bringing into contrast of the refinements of the medieval Islamic civilization, which had been adopted by the Outremer noblemen, with the comparatively stark and crude European living conditions of the time, and the suggestion that the returning Crusaders brought Eastern standards of culture to the West.

The Sowers of the Thunder

The Sowers of the Thunder is a short story by Robert E. Howard (published in Oriental Stories, Winter 1932) that takes place in Outremer, (the Crusader states) in the time of General Baibars and deals with the General's friendly/adversarial relationship with Cahal Ruadh O'Donnell, an Irish Crusader with a troubled past cut in the Howardian mold.

Wernigerode Armorial

More royal and ducal arms are given, partly real and partly fictitious, including those of the Dauphin, Wessex(?), Italy (kingdom of Naples), Ireland, Outremer (the Jerusalem Cross, and of "Calistria, queen of the Amazons", Brittany, "the great Khan", Arabia, Niniveh, Granada.
