During the early 1800s, express wagons filled with oysters crossed the Allegheny Mountains to reach the American Midwest.

The archway in front of the restaurant is also famous for an acoustical quirk making it a whispering gallery by which someone standing in one corner can hear someone standing in the opposite corner perfectly no matter how softly they speak.

The base of the building is made of Stony Creek pink granite; the herringbone ceilings that graced the vaulted waiting room are constructed with Guastavino tiles (also used in New York’s Grand Central Terminal and the adjacent Oyster Bar); and the station’s prominent clock tower, embellished with eight gargoyles, was modeled after the Torre del Mangia on the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena Italy.
Today there is a new push of development in the area as well as nearby Midtown that began with the relocation of the historic, upscale Colcord Oyster Bar to an A-Alley storefront from the renovated Colcord Building in the Central Business District.
The song was also heard in four of the seven Police Academy films starting from the first film up until Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol as the tango song in The Blue Oyster Bar scenes.
