The 2013 Southern Thailand bombings were a series of bombings that took place in Danok, Padang Besar and Sadao, Songkhla Province, Thailand near the Malaysian border on December 22, 2013.
The train crosses the Thai-Malaysian border at Padang Besar before reaching the destination at the port city of Butterworth, which is opposite Penang Island, a resort island on the northern west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
The location is indeed much closer as compare to other Malaysia-Thailand border towns such as Bukit Kayu Hitam and Padang Besar.

The road and railway respectively connect directly to Padang Besar – Sadao Highway (Thailand Route 4054) and State Railway of Thailand to form part of the Trans-Asian Railway.

Construction of the tunnel was started in 2008 by a joint venture of MMC Corporation Berhad and Gamuda Berhad as part of their electrified double tracking project between Ipoh and Padang Besar and is expected to complete by 2013.
