The political case for the desafuero was championed mainly by the federal government, the governing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).
A second time the candidacy was offered him by the Partido Acción Nacional in 1946, but he declined it again.
Since January 2007, Luis Ernesto Derbez has been the General Director of the Centre for Globalization, Competitiveness and Democracy at the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Santa Fe, and Secretary for International Affairs of the PAN.
His political activity started in 1996, when he was candidate to be municipal presidente (Mayor) of Torreón but it was beaten by Jorge Zermeño Infante of the (PAN) in that chance.
