While officially rejected, the writer was reportedly earning status in counter-culture and among dissidents: novelist and anti-communist activist Paul Goma recounted that deportees to the Bărăgan learned his texts by heart.
At the end of August 1968, Paul Goma became a member of the Romanian Communist Party, in an act of solidarity with the Romanian position during the Warsaw Pact Invasion of Czechoslovakia (Romania did not take part, indeed condemning the invasion).

During this time, the department coordinated a 1981 bomb attack on the RFE headquarters, perpetrated by Carlos the Jackal, as well as attempts to assassinate RFE employees and the dissident writer Paul Goma.
