Prior to his retirement in 1995, Paul worked as a permanent substitute teacher at Oakland Technical High School.

Montauk's health declined over the last decade of his life and in his final few years Montauk was afflicted with Parkinson's disease and other infirmities, but he continued to make an active contribution to the SWP.
The VDC was formed by Jerry Rubin, Paul Montauk, and a number of others including Abbie Hoffman and Stew Albert, between May 21 and May 22, 1965 during a 35 hour long anti-Vietnam war protest that took place inside and around the University of California, Berkeley, and attracted over 35,000 people.
