The name Pelagos (meaning "sea") dates from classical antiquity, and refers to an oak forest on the road from Mantineia to Tegea.
The Municipality of Alonnisos includes the nearby islands of Adelfoi, Gioura, Kyra Panagia (Pelagos), Peristera, Piperi, Psathoura and Skantzoura.
The Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII in the 10th century mentioned it under the name of Pizuh, and later it was called Insula Tilagus in documents ("pelagos"in Greek means sea), and its Latin name was Insula maior.
Solglimt and Pelagos then departed on 25 January with their 10,000 tons of whale oil to France, Pelagos reaching Bordeaux on 11 March and Solglimt on 16 March.
The station is named with the Ionian Sea, on its slogans, it reads ...not the sea, the radio station (Ionion, ohi ton pelagos...) One of the jingles featured Fred Flintstone (of The Flintstones) in the original voice and said Yabba Dabba Doo, leave a message, I'll get back to you.
