In 2003 the chancellor of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Chancellor, Peter Englert, suggested that the university concentrate solely on research and cease managing the school.
Englert remains at the university as a faculty member in the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, and continues to work on research related to the planet Mars.
