Aslet was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he earned a degree in the history of architecture.

He was the youngest son of a large family, by his father's second marriage; his eldest half-brother, James, later became a clergyman, a fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge and a magistrate in Yorkshire, whilst the younger half-brother, Richard, would also join the army, rising to the rank of lieutenant-general.

He became Parliamentary Private Secretary to Secretary of State for Employment Norman Fowler from 1987 to 1990, and was then PPS to both Eric Forth and Robert Jackson in 1991 to 1992, and finally to Secretary of State for the Environment Michael Howard (his contemporary at Peterhouse) from 1992 to 1993.
The son of Peter and Pauline Pennant-Rea, he was educated at the Peterhouse School, an Anglican church boarding school near Marandellas, Rhodesia (now Marondera, Zimbabwe), before attending Trinity College, Dublin and Manchester University, where he received his M.A.
After he had retired from playing, Singleton spent nearly twenty years (1964–1983) teaching at Peterhouse School in Marondera, and in 1985 he and his wife emigrated again, this time to Australia where they settled in Wagga Wagga.
