The commune contains the source of a spring called the Soie which joins up with the Arentèle in the neighbouring commune of Pierrepont.

Madam De Stael, a French author, at one time invested in the town lands, on the advice of her friend Gouverneur Morris, while it was still part of Pierrepont.
Lady Beauchamp died in 1876, and on 24 September 1878 Lord Beauchamp married Lady Emily Pierrepont (16 March 1853-11 May 1935), daughter of the 3rd Earl Manvers and his wife Georgiana Jane E. F. de Franquetot, at Perlethorpe in Nottinghamshire.
The earl had five sons, one of whom became Henry Pierrepont, 1st Marquess of Dorchester, another was Francis Pierrepont (died 1659), a colonel in the parliamentary army and afterwards a member of the Long Parliament; and another was William Pierrepont (1608–1679), father-in-law of Gilbert Holles, 3rd Earl of Clare and also Henry Cavendish Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne.
He was the third son of Richard Stapleton of Carlton by Snaith, Yorkshire, by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Henry Pierrepont of Holme Pierrepont.
A watercolour sketch titled 'In Captain Pierrepont's Grounds' was painted by Anthony Devis (1729–1817) not long after Captain William Pierrepont of HMS Naiad acquired Shalford Manor in 1800.
In 1973 the regatta moved to its current home at Holme Pierrepont, due to the frequency of unfair weather conditions at the Child Beale Estate, and the ability to hold six lane racing at Holme Pierrepont.
