Its flora is typical of ancient woodland and Common Bluebell and Wood Anemone are two of the more common species to be found in the wood; Greater Butterfly-orchid, Violet Helleborine and Crested Cow-wheat are amongst rarer plants found.


Briddlesford Nature Reserve

Other locally distributed ancient woodland specialities include green hellebore (Helleborus viridis), greater butterfly orchid (Platanthera chlorantha) and thin spiked wood sedge (Carex strigosa).

Fiddler's Elbow National Nature Reserve

Orchids are also present, with the varieties bird's-nest (Neottia nidus-avis), early purple (Orchis mascula) and the greater butterfly-orchid (Platanthera chlorantha) being found.

Although the ground flora largely consists of ivy (Hedera helix) and sanicle (Sanicula europaea), there are several other species present, including three scarce orchids: bird's-nest orchid (Neottia nidus-avis), white helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium), fly orchid (Ophrys insectifera), greater butterfly orchid (Platanthera chlorantha) and sword-leaved helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia).
