The Aurora Foundation, a partnership between Wells College and the Pleasant Rowland Foundation, renovated the Aurora Inn in 2001 to redevelop it for lodging, dining and special events.
In 2005 the Aurora Foundation and the Pleasant Rowland Foundation completed a multi-million dollar renovation of the house.
In 1986 Rowland founded the Pleasant Company, which manufactures the "American Girl" dolls, books and accessories.

Rowland was born in the Chicago area and grew up in Bannockburn, a suburb north of Chicago.
