In 1985, Cineplex bought out the Plitt Theatres chain (previously United Paramount Theatres and ABC Theatres).
Paramount was required to divest the theater chain as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case United States v. Paramount Pictures, Inc. (1948).
The success of the Syufy theater led Mann Theatres and Plitt Theatres to exit the Las Vegas market, selling all of their theaters to Syufy.
