Among the non-Brazilian clubs which have disputed the competition, are América, Toluca and UNAM Pumas of Mexico, Pohang Iron and Steel Company (Posco) of South Korea and Shanghai Shenhua of China.
They faced Pohang Steelers in Tokyo, Japan but was beaten by Korean side 1–2 and finished the tournament as runner-up.
In late December 2011, it was revealed that Zicu had been transferred to South Korean football club Pohang Steelers, signing a two-year deal with an option for a fourth year (a two-year extension) for an undisclosed fee, though media reports estimated it to be €2.3 million.

After two seasons, he moved abroad in 1994 to play in Spanish Segunda División club Atlético Marbella where he played until 1996 when he moved to Far East and had a short spell in South Korean K-League club Pohang Steelers, called "Atoms" by then.
