The case of Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co. challenged the constitutionality of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act of 1894 which taxed incomes over $4,000 at the rate of two percent.

Tax per head

Another income tax statute in 1894 was overturned in Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co. in 1895, where the Supreme Court held that income taxes on income from property, such as rent income, interest income, and dividend income (but not income taxes on income from wages, employment, etc.) were to be treated as direct taxes.


Arthur E. Andersen

Arthur E. Andersen also served as Treasurer of the Norwegian-American Historical Association (1936–42) and was a director of the State Bank & Trust Co. (Evanston, Illinois).
