In Clun the A488 crosses the ancient Clun Bridge and this, together with other sections of the route such as at Pontesbury, mean that larger vehicles regularly get stuck and cause significant damage.
Wolverhampton Wanderers and Welsh international footballer David Edwards was born in and attended school in the village.
In 1568 Edward Grey of London, son of 3rd Baron Grey of Powis, came of age and conveyed the manors of Plas Y Dynas and Trewern in Montgomeryshire to Edward Kynaston, and later the manor of Pontesbury to William Leighton.
The route, which was conceived in the late 1850s, was planned to connect Shrewsbury via Hanwood on the Cambrian Line, with Pontesbury, Minsterley, Montgomery and Newtown.
Occasional quarry products are transported only a short distance along the route of the old railway to a public road (A488) leading to Pontesbury.
