Pontic is still spoken by large numbers of people in Ukraine: mainly Mariupol, but also other places in Ukraine such as Odessa and Donetsk, Russia (around Stavropol) and Georgia.

There is also some limited production of modern literature in Pontic, including poetry collections (among the most renowned writers is Kostas Diamantidis), novels, and translated Asterix comic albums.

After the Battle of Manzikert the town, like most of Asia Minor, came under the control of the Seljuq Turks, but remained a centre of Pontic Greek culture and the Greek Orthodox church.
