Potohar was known as Paurava in the past and the king of this region was King Porus and he is known for the famous battle with Alexander between the regions of Jhelum river and Indus river.

The Potohar plateau was at this time ruled by the Gakhar king Mang Khan Gakhar whose territory included the areas of Chana, Bhaneer and Choomukh (nowadays known as Mirpur) as well as the areas beyond and into the mountains of Kashmir.
He was born to a family that had settled in Gurdaspur from Jammu and Kashmir and belonged from a Minhas clan predominantly found in Northern Punjab and in Kashmir regions.
