Born in Oneglia, Natta attended the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa together with the future President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, and in that city he began taking part in the opposition to Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime.
On June 24, 1985, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy Nilde Iotti, in agreement with Senate Speaker Francesco Cossiga, convened the two houses of the Italian Parliament, integrated with a number of representatives appointed by the twenty Italian regions, in a common session in order to commence voting for the election of the new President of the Italian Republic.

On October 24, 2012, Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic, awards him the honour of Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his contribution to the discovery of a new, Higgs-like particle at the LHC.
As President of the Italian Republic, Scalfaro was Head of several Italian Orders from 28 May 1992 to 15 May 1999: the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the Military Order of Italy, the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity, the Order of Merit for Labour and the Order of Vittorio Veneto.
"Angels" has also received the patronage of the Holy See and the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano.
