After appearing in the 1991 episode of Press Gang “Holding On,” he went on to play estate agent Trevor, Becky’s (Fiona Gillies) lover, in two seasons of Steven Moffat’s Joking Apart.
In the book Sam and his uncle were forced into the navy by the press gang.
He also starred in the short-lived but critically acclaimed sitcom about the Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony, Thanks which Entertainment Weekly called "the funniest new sitcom of the 1999–2000 season." He made an appearance in the Press Gang episode "Chance is a Fine Thing" as Clark Kent, Judy's jealous boyfriend.
Her first full-length novel, Cereus Blooms at Night, published by Press Gang in 1996, was shortlisted for the Scotia Bank Giller Prize in 1997, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the Chapters Books in Canada First Novel Award, and was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize.
