Just prior to marrying Hefner, Conrad was knighted by his Highness Prince Frederick von Anhalt also known as Robert Hans Lichtenberg, the adult adopted son of Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt who was daughter-in-law of German Emperor Wilhelm II.
On 10 June 1898, Marie-Auguste was born in Ballenstedt, Anhalt, Germany, to the then Prince Eduard of Anhalt and his wife Princess Louise of Saxe-Altenburg.

Upon his death in 1881, he was succeeded by his daughter Princess Marie, who sold the estates to the Arnim family.
