Originally titled as Khatta Meetha, the story of the film is adapted from the Malayalam film Punjabi House (1998), with a tagline of "Love meets confusion meets love." The film has Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in their third film together along with actors, Neha Dhupia, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Shakti Kapoor, Om Puri and Anupam Kher.
It ran for 200 days and became the third-largest hit of 1998, following Harikrishnans and Summer in Bethlehem.

Harikrishnans, which featured Mohanlal and Mammootty in their first appearance together for seven years, and Summer in Bethlehem, with Suresh Gopi, Jayaram, Manju Warrier and Mohanlal, were the most eagerly awaited releases, but Punjabi House became a blockbuster in the first week alone, with a gross of more than 4 crores.
Peters received his first break as a music director through the Malayalam movie Punjabi House in which he composed both melodies and folk songs.
