This species was found by Phạm Đình Sắc (Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR), an organ under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST)) and Wilson Lourenço (Paris Museum of Natural History – National Museum of Natural History) inside Thiên Đường Cave, a cave located in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Quảng Bình Province and they announced their discovery in Comptes Rendus Biologies.
Based on linguistic diversity, the most probable homeland of the Vietic languages appears to have been located in modern-day Bolikhamsai Province and Khammouane Province in Laos as well as parts of Nghệ An Province and Quảng Bình Province in Vietnam.

Gumprecht et al. (2004) write that, previously, this species had been known from only two specimens, but was rediscovered in central Vietnam (Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Quảng Bình Province) in 2001 (Ziegler and Herrmann, 2002).
