Greaves joined Granada Television in Quay Street, Manchester in 1964 as a reporter and editor for the regional news magazine Scene at 6:30, working alongside the likes of Bill Grundy, Brian Trueman, Michael Parkinson and Mike Scott.

Following the decision of ITV to relocate from its Granada Studios site adjacent to Spinningfields, in order to move to the nearby MediaCityUK development, the 13.5 acre plot on Quay Street became available for development.
On 4 January 1871 he and Richard Bramwell Taylor started the Manchester and Salford Boys’ and Girls’ Refuges and Homes in a small house on Quay Street, Deansgate.
In 1981 and 1986, the Society operated steam hauled trains with Glenbrook Vintage Railway's Mallet locomotive and WW 480 along Quay Street in Auckland as part of tourism promotions.
