To assist its passage into law, Holland appointed twenty members known as the "suicide squad", to vote for abolition, just as the Australian state of Queensland had done to abolish its upper house in 1922.

The last two stanzas of the poem were read out by Frederick Brentnall MP on 15 July 1891 in the Queensland Legislative Council during a 'Vote of Thanks' to the armed police who broke up the Barcaldine strike camp.

William Villiers Brown

He was the member for Townsville in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1885 to 1888 and from 1891 to 1893, and a member of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1901 to 1915.
