After grammar school and Army service he was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and then worked for two years as an announcer, producer and scriptwriter for Radio Netherlands.
Radio Nederland carried speech programming on shortwave and satellite in the English, Spanish, Indonesian, French and Papiamento languages.
Several such services are in current use by international radio broadcasters such as "Huna Amsterdam" for Radio Netherlands Worldwide to the Middle East, and "VOA24" for Voice of America to Africa.
At 7:00pm (1000Z), on Saturdays, The State We're In from Radio Netherlands Worldwide can be heard on 12.06 MHz.
