Afdera Franchetti

Afdera Franchetti was the daughter of Baron Raimondo Franchetti, a famous explorer who traveled extensively in Ethiopia and chartered hitherto unexplored territories (Dancalia) during the 1920s.

Giuseppe Maria Giulietti

In his memory, Raimondo Franchetti named the lake he discovered in 1929 "Lake Giulietti" (also known as Lake Afrera).

In his autobiography, Haile Selassie reports that when Italian Baron Raimondo Franchetti landed his plane in a field outside of Addis Alem, onlookers "noticed that inside it were a machine-gun as well as rifles and many cartridges" — implying these were to arm Iyasu's followers.
