The character of Philo Gubb was created by prolific pulp fiction writer Ellis Parker Butler and first appeared in the May 1913 issue of Redbook magazine.
There were several cases since the National Geographic case of questionable photo manipulation, including editing a photo of Cher on the cover of Redbook to change her smile and her dress.

Miller was a model as a child, appearing in a Wonder Bread commercial when she was six months old, posing at three for Francesco Scavullo in an Ivory soap advertisement, and being photographed for the cover of Redbook.
From 1974-80, he made his living as a journalist, writing for The New York Times, The Nation, Harper's Weekly, Mother Jones, Redbook and many other publications.
