From 1951 until 1964, he worked as an advertising consultant for the German cigarette manufacturer Reemtsma.
In 1923, production was moved to Altona, now part of the city of Hamburg, and that is where Reemtsma's main headquarters still are today.
In 1977, Tchibo purchased shares of Beiersdorf and in 1980, the company became the majority shareholder of the Hamburg cigarette producer Reemtsma.
The Waldorf-Astoria tobacco brand, with the portrait of John Jacob Astor, was taken over by a different company and is currently produced by Reemtsma.
