Born Beth Martin, in New York City, she was the daughter of American Opera singers Riccardo Martin and Ruano Bogislav.
In 1901 he was granted an endowment by industrialist Henry Flagler to study to further his vocal studies in Paris with Giovanni Sbriglia, Jean de Reszke and Léon Escalaïs.
