For the Atlanta & West Point Railroad, he took the position of assistant general counsel (1887–1893), simultaneously serving as general counsel for the East & West Railroad of Alabama (1887–1889), and again as assistant general counsel to the Richmond and Danville Railroad and Richmond and West Point Terminal Railway and Warehouse Company, from 1890–1892.
In the 1880s, Haskell became the president of the Columbia and Greenville Railroad.
In 1880, Dooley joined the board of directors of the Richmond and Danville Railroad, which soon expanded into a multi state system of over 3,000 miles and in 1894, became the basis of the Southern Railway.
