The railway connected Hiitola (Khiytola) on the Vyborg–Joensuu Railway with Finland Station in St. Petersburg, bypassing the Riihimäki-Vyborg-Saint Petersburg trunk line of Finnish railways.

The Sestroretsk spur line was laid by request of the Russian Ministry of Defence for communication of the Sestroretsk armory with the strategic Riihimäki-Saint Petersburg railroad in 1871.
