2 unusual facts about Robinson Crusoe Island

Robinson Crusoe Island

The Juan Fernández Firecrown is an endemic and critically endangered red hummingbird, which is best known for its needle-fine black beak and silken feather coverage.

There is no evidence of an earlier discovery either by Polynesians, despite the proximity to Easter Island, or by Native Americans.

De Filippi's Petrel

On the Juan Fernández Islands, the bird is no longer believed to be nesting on Robinson Crusoe Island but Santa Clara Island had a few hundred birds present in 1991, a number not likely to increase because there is limited availability of suitable nesting sites on the island.
