The Catholic high school was established in Reno, Nevada in 1948 and named for the first Bishop of Sacramento, Patrick Manogue.

On February 26, 1974, Cummins was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento and titular bishop of Lambaesis by Pope Paul VI.
In 1997, while serving as the pastor of Saint Leo the Great Parish in San Jose and as the diocesan director for vocations, Pope John Paul II named Garcia titular bishop of Bapara and auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento.
