During his tenure as the head of PAGASA, Kintanar was appointed Third Vice-President of WMO in 1978 before becoming the President of the eight World Meteorological Organization (WMO) congress in 1978, and was re-elected for another four-year term as the President of the WMO on 1983.

An asteroid (6636 Kintanar) was named after him in 2007 for his contributions to the science of meteorology.
