In 1933 he took the coaching courses of the British football school at Folkstone and in 1940 those of the Romanian football school of O.N.E.F. As manager he led Sportul Studenţesc and Jiul Petroşani to the top flight of Romanian football and he won the Romanian national championship and the Romanian Cup with UTA Arad.
The first match to be played at the stadium was an exhibition game between a team of former Petrolul Ploiești, the generation which won the Romanian Cup in 1995, and a selection of former Romanian internationals, amongst which Gheorghe Hagi, Gheorghe Popescu, Viorel Moldovan, Ovidiu Stângă and Daniel Prodan.
Sorin Frunză was the club's top goalscorer, recording 18 goals, 16 in the league and two in the Romanian Cup.
