It is said that the idol was hidden for years to protect it from invaders while another idol was brought from the Rukmini temple and installed in its absence.
According to folklore, Lord Krishna came to the village of Madhavpur Ghed after kidnapping Rukmini and got married to her at this very place.

Meanwhile, Shishupala was overjoyed at the news from Rukmi that he could simply go to Kundina (present day Koundanyapur) Amravati district and claim Rukmini.

Rukmini went on to become the first Indian lady of so-called decent birth to dance in public, and was instrumental in rejuvenating the Bharatanatyam style of classical dance by emancipating it from the brothels and the Devadasi community to which it had been confined for many centuries.
Krishna married Rukmini by abducting her from the Vidarbha kingdom, though Rukmi wanted to give her as bride to Chedi king Shishupala.
In 1940 her eldest granddaughter, Bharani Thirunal Rukmini Bayi (Rukmini Varma) was born.
Vasanthotsavam: During the annual festival, the idols of Lord Krishna and Rukmini join Malayappa swami and consorts and Rama idol on the third day on a procession around the four streets surrounding the temple and returned to the vasanta mandapam.
