Salt from the saltpans at Saltcoats was often used in the manufacture of Dunlop cheese and it contained magnesia and Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) which gave the cheese a pleasant and distinctive taste; indeed it was debated whether cheese made using cheaper imported mined salt could be called 'Dunlop' cheese.
It is also a major transportation hub, with provincial Highways 10, 15, and 47 running through the city – as well as the Canadian National Railway mainline.
The Fallows with the faint iris ring were good quality exhibition birds and became known as "Moffat" or Scottish Fallows after their owner, Jim Moffat, of Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland.
He played professionally as a central defender before retiring and becoming a teacher at various schools around North Ayrshire, including the now demolished St Andrews Academy in Saltcoats.
The school first opened on 29 October 2007 following the merger of pupils from St Andrews Academy, Saltcoats and St Michael's Academy, Kilwinning.
