As the youngest of nine children, he was born to Ebenezer and Catherine Newell on 24 July 1784 at Durham, Maine.
The Rev. Samuel Newell arrived on September 7, 1813 on the Jaffna peninsula and occupied the Tellippilai Union premises, which at that time consisted of dilapidated and snake-infested structures dating back to the Portuguese of the 16th century.
