From 1953 to 1997, he served as a professor at Columbia, obtaining the eminent Seth Low chair before attaining the rank of University Professor.
In November 1903, McClellan defeated the sitting Mayor, Seth Low (independent Fusion), for a two-year term.
During his 1901 campaign, he had the support of humorist Mark Twain.
Berghahn now holds the chair of Seth Low Professor of History at Columbia, and is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
