Chibisan Date

The series chronicles the story of Seiji Chiga, a young man from Japan studying to become an artist on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and his interactions with his new friends, during the 1960s (the Shōwa period in Japan).

Shōwa period

On December 13, 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army, following the capture of Nanjing, Japanese soldiers began the Nanjing Massacre (sometimes called the "Rape of Nanking"), which resulted in a massive number of civilian deaths and the large-scale rape of Chinese women, including infants and elderly.


Catgirl

In 1924, Kenji Miyazawa (Japanese author of children's literature in the early Shōwa period of Japan) created Yukibango, a cat girl, in his first collection of children's stories Chūmon no Ōi Ryōriten (注文の多い料理店, The Restaurant of Many Orders).

Gokashō, Shiga

From Edo period until Shōwa period, Gokashō produced many merchants; for example, a founder of Wacoal.

Pavilion for Japanese Art

The museum's collection includes traditional woodblock prints from the Edo period (1615–1868), as well as a large number of prints from the Meiji period (1868–1912), Taishō period (1912–1926), and the Shōwa period (1926–1989).
