4 unusual facts about Shackleton Barracks

Eirjet

29 March 2006 - Eirjet issued an apology after a flight it operated from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to City of Derry Airport on behalf of Ryanair landed at the wrong airfield, touching down at Ballykelly Airfield, a former RAF base and more recently an Army base some 4 miles away from its intended destination.

Shackleton Barracks

It was, until summer 2008, home to an infantry battalion - 2nd Battalion Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.

Some days later French President Charles de Gaulle visited Ballykelly to personally award medals to members of the crew.

The closure eventually took place in March 2008, when the infantry battalion, 2nd Battalion, Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment moved to Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich, London.
