On the 30 April 1990 a Royal Air Force Avro Shackleton (WR965) flying from RAF Lossiemouth and Benbecula Airport crashed near to the village, killing all ten passengers and crew on board.
An RAF Avro Shackleton from Gibraltar criss-crossed the area, pinpointing boats and survivors and guiding rescuers to them.

Some of the more successful British aircraft with contra-rotating propellers are the Avro Shackleton, powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, and the Fairey Gannet, which used the Double Mamba Mk.101 engine.
No. 269 Squadron was reformed at North Front, Gibraltar on 1 January 1952 from part of No. 224 Squadron and moved on 24 March to moved to RAF Ballykelly, Ulster, as a maritime reconnaissance unit equipped with Avro Shackleton patrol bombers.
