In August 2013, he announced his candidacy for the 2014 Newark mayoral election joining the field with fellow council members Ras Baraka and Anibal Ramos, Jr. and former Assistant State Attorney General Shavar Jeffries.
In 2008-2010, he took a leave of absence to serve as Assistant Attorney General and Counsel to New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram and led several departments, including the Juvenile Justice Commission and the Civil Rights Division.
