Silberling is the colloquial name for the n-coaches of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, a type of regional passenger coach of which more than 7,000 units were built from 1958 to 1981.
From the early 1990s until the introduction of the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn there were services on the Bruchsal–Germersheim–Ludwigshafen–Mannheim–Heidelberg–Neckargemünd–Meckenheim–Sinsheim–Steinsfurt–Eppingen/Heilbronn route, operated with locomotives of class 218 hauling Silberling carriages.
On 25 May 1984, the S4 service commenced on an above-ground route, which had previously been operated by class 212 locomotives, hauling Silberling carriages.
Individual services, especially in the off-peak or additional peak hour services are operated by trains composed of Silberling carriages hauled by class 218 locomotives or diesel multiple units of class 612, 611 or 642.
