He is a Gold medalist from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art for his college campaign for the film Meera, by Gulzar.

After his BSc in Microbiology in 1986, to explore his creative side, he pursued Bachelors in Fine Arts at Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art where he received a Gold Medal for his excellent artistic understanding.

Sunil Mahadik, an alumnus of Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, began his career in advertising as a visualiser with Trikaya.
Later, he received his diploma from Sir J.J. School of Art in 1952, and was part of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group, which drew stylistic inspiration from Western Modernism, and included greats of Indian paintings such as F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza and M.F. Husain.
