When the scheme was discovered, Goodman, who was committed to the Gatehouse Prison, was offered a free pardon if he would inform against Sir John Fenwick.
He took an active part against Gilbert Burnet for his 'Pastoral Letter,' and spoke vehemently against the prosecution of the war and on behalf of Sir John Fenwick.
By his wife, Mary (d. 1708), daughter of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Carlisle, he had three sons and one daughter, all of whom died young, and are buried with Fenwick at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
