He began life as chaplain and tutor in the family of Sir John Gell at Hopton, Derbyshire.

Gell was married in January 1609, at the age of 15, to Elizabeth Willoughby, daughter of Sir Percival Willoughby of Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire.
Thence on March 19, accompanied by three of his sons, he marched out with his troops and engaged Sir John Gell, 1st Baronet and Sir William Brereton at Hopton Heath.
Pollock was the fifth son of Mr George Pollock, fourth son of Sir Frederick Pollock (1st Baronet, of Hatton) (elder brother of Field Marshal Sir George Pollock, 1st Baronet, of The Khyber Pass).
