It is the burial ground of thousands of Soviet Army soldiers who fell during World War II while liberating the city in April 1945 from the occupying German Wehrmacht units and the remaining Slovak troops who supported the clero-fascist Tiso government.

Slavin, born in Minsk, Belarusian SSR, USSR, was the youngest of the victims at the age of eighteen.
Slavin taught for many years at Youngstown State University and his books made a significant contribution to the understanding of the French Revolution in the "history from below" style established by Albert Soboul.

Slavin does impressions of James Cagney, Ronald Colman, Charles Laughton, James Stewart, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Humphrey Bogart.
