Jan Janz Slop or Jan Slob (1643–1727), Dutch Golden Age painter
In the 1950s musical Guys and Dolls, the character Benny Southstreet sings, "When a lazy slob takes a goody steady job, And he smells from Vitalis and Barbasol..." as a metaphor for a man cleaning himself up to retain a woman's affections.
He went on to appear in two popular British television sitcoms during the 1990s, playing loveable slob Onslow in Roy Clarke's Keeping Up Appearances (1990–95) followed by Twiggy in Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne's The Royle Family (1998–2000), the latter of which he reprised his role for specials in 2006 and 2008.
--"baggy" implies being a slob, sloppy, messy. "flared" is classy, deliberate, etc.--> This British version was soon being produced by Savile Row tailors in London.
Guinness World Records, known until 2000 as The Guinness Book of Records has its origins in the North Slob.
Allen Barra and George Ignatin were early adopters in combining the two modern-day statistics, multiplying them together to form what is now known as "SLOB" (Slugging × On-Base).
